In a city that runs on a dwindling supply of magic, a young boy is drawn into a life of wizardry and adventure. Author Sarah Prineas works her own spells as she transports us to an extraordinary world where cities are run on living magic and even a thief can become a wizard's apprentice. Diana Wynne Jones, author of Howl's Moving Castle, praised this middle grade fantasy series filled with magic and wonder, saying of the first, "I couldn't put it down. Wonderful, exciting stuff." This collection contains all four novels in the series, plus the digital original novella The Magic Thief A Proper Wizard.

The Magic Thief Conn should have dropped dead the day he picked Nevery's pocket and touched the wizard's locus magicalicus, a stone used to focus magic and work spells. But for some reason he did not. Nevery finds that interesting, and he takes Conn as his apprentice on the provision that the boy find a locus stone of his own. But Conn has little time to search for his stone between wizard lessons and helping Nevery discover who—or what—is stealing the city of Wellmet's magic.

The Magic Thief Lost Conn may only be a wizard's apprentice, but even he knows it's dangerous to play with fire . . . especially around magic. But Conn is drawn to the murmurs he hears every time he sets off an explosion—something is trying to talk to him, to warn him. When none of the wizards listen, Conn takes matters into his own hands. His quest to protect everything he loves brings him face-to-face with a powerful sorcerer-king and a treachery beyond even his vivid imagination.

The Magic Thief Found Sneaking out of prison isn't easy, unless you are a thief, or a wizard. Luckily, Conn is both! Trouble is, once he's out, where does he go? His home is a pile of rubble since he blew it up doing magic. His master, the wizard Nevery, is not happy with him. Worst of all, Conn's been exiled, and staying in the city will mean his death.

The Magic Thief A Proper Wizard When Verent, a young apprentice from neighboring Danivelle, comes to Wellmet to ask for Conn's help with his city's magical problems, he is less than impressed with Conn. Will Verent be able to overcome his misgivings about Conn in order to help his town? And with Conn's help, will Verent become a proper wizard?

The Magic Thief Home Duchess Rowan has promoted Conn to ducal magister, but the other wizards see him only as a thief. But something sinister is brewing, as magicians' locus stones are being stolen and magical spells are going awry. As Conn faces old enemies and powerful magical forces, is he strong enough to save the city he calls home?

The Magic Thief Complete Collection Books 15 edition by Sarah Prineas Children eBooks

I found this book at the library and I thought I might as well try it out. I was surprised by how much I absolutely loved it. I ended up buying the complete set on my kindle. It was an extremely fun read and well thought out. I have recommended this book to a few kids around 6th-8th grade because they have had a hard time getting into reading. I'm glad I got the pleasure of reading this book. The ending didn't drop you on your but and it pretty much took care of all the loose ends. You know what is going to happen after the series ends and what he is going to do with his life. I hate to see this series end and wish that it could continue. All I can say is thank you for the awesome read Sarah Prineas! :p

The Magic Thief Complete Collection Books 15 edition by Sarah Prineas Children eBooks Reviews

This is an excellent third/fourth grade, or so, intro to fantasy, magic, and adventure.

The hero, Conn the street thief, is destined for great things as a wizard. Nevery the wizard senses this and takes him on as an apprentice. Adventure and excitement follow.

Conn is the primary narrator, and his wonderful voice carries these books. He is street smart, but not a wise guy. He is made of true-blue hero stuff, being loyal, honest, conscientious, brave and shrewd. He is also subject to youthful error, exaggeration and false hope, so he presents a well-rounded, age appropriate protagonist. Nevery is a classic fair-but-firm, grumpy/softy master. Benet, Nevery's "muscle" is an effective soft-hearted tough guy. Rounding out the gang is Rowan, the ruling Duchess's daughter. She is smart, sassy, adventurous, and an excellent partner for Conn. She also provides a nice counterpoint to Conn, (in a Hermione Granger kind of way).

The first book is not frantic, and there are no monsters. It's about how Conn starts to grow up to be a wizard, and how he and his companions use magic and their own pluck to solve problems and help their city. There is "political intrigue", but it is simple enough to not confuse the story, (i.e. some bad wizards, a criminal kingpin, some spies and sneaks - that kind of thing).

The second book in the series is a bit slow, and mostly builds the characters and continues the arc from book one. The main problem is that nothing develops, (not the characters, not the understanding of magic, not the environment, not Conn's relationship with his master), and the actual plot for this episode is almost like an afterthought.

The third volume marks a return to form. The established characters continue to develop and the plot takes off with some interesting twists and turns. In many series that have a comfortable cast of characters and an an engaging world volume three is where the story suddenly turns from a modest small tale to some sort of epic quest/conflict space opera. That is not the case here. We stay in Conn's city and Conn's life and the focus of the story is on the limited but rich world that has been built in the previous books.

The fourth volume is a short story that adds a bit to our understanding of Conn. It's a tasty bonus, but definitely a side story. (It's written from the point of view of a character other than Conn, which was a refreshing angle.)

The fifth, and final, volume of what was after all supposed to be a trilogy rekindles the excitement of the first volume. Everyone is back and we pick up right where we left off in volume three. Conn and Nevery and Benet and Rowan and Embre and Captain Kerrn, and that bad baby dragon, Pip, are all here, and the book takes off in a rush. By the end of Book 3 Conn had brought a new younger magic to supplement the older but weakening magic that had always powered Wellmet. As Book 4 opens, the two magics are not working well together, ("...like two dragons, both trying to fit into one dragon's space,..."), and magic is in considerable disarray. Rowan, the ruling Duchess, needs Conn to serve as ducal magister, (head wizard), and get a handle on the problem. Conn resists, and then when a locus magicalicus stone is stolen he is accused and his whole thief history comes back to the fore. Who is really stealing these magical objects, and why?

As always Prineas has a good handle on her material, with a nice balance of magic, action, intrigue, Wellmet politics, humor and character development. On reflection, these books are actually pretty "sprawling" for middle grade fantasy adventure, but Prineas keeps everything sharp, clear and energetic, and completely accessible to a younger reader.

I'm a big fan of Delaney's Spook's Apprentice series, which covers similar ground, but for an older reader. (More violence, more complexity, more depth.) But, this Magic Thief series is a wonderful way to introduce a reader to fantasy, and would be a great stepping stone to the Spook's Apprentice series. Then, for what it's worth, as your reader gets older, you could move on to F.E. Higgins' Black Book of Secrets, (yet a more advanced and deliciously well-written apprentice type book), and beyond.

So, well worth serious consideration.

Please note that I received free ecopies of these books in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Awesome magic fantasy. My kids love it.
This is a fabulous series that will capture the imaginations of my reluctant jr high readers. I would recommend it for 5th and 6th grade as well. It would also be a great read-aloud.
